Square Rangers 4 Spartak Watling 1

Saturday 9th December

After a two week lay-off Square Rangers came back in style to give a wonderful all-round performance to beat neighbours Spartak Watling.

From the kick-off Square Rangers took a stronghold on the midfield and this enabled the team to quickly dictate the tempo of the match. This both inspired and influenced the team as Rangers were able to force the play forwards, enjoying good possession along the way, and creating much by way of goal-mouth action. The team seemed to be first to every ball and at their commitment always seemed to put Watling under pressure. Rangers deservedly capitalised on their superiority with two first half goals scored by Matt Childs, who neatly slotted past the outrushing keeper, and then Josh Berry scoring direct from a corner. Square Rangers were able to keep their two goal lead thanks to some very tight defending by the back four, and also thanks to Ryan Larrington who yet again saved a penalty, brilliantly diving to his right and holding on to the ball as it spun towards the goal line.

The second half saw an improved Watling spiritedly trying to claw their way back and for the opening quarter of an hour the play was intense as both teams fought hard for possession. A quick breakaway led to a goal for Watling to set up a possible grandstand finish, but then centre midfielders Matthew Custance and Jack Sullivan took command, ably assisted by wide players Tom Gee and Joe Evans to see Square Rangers comfortably through to the end. This period included well taken goals scored by Jack Sullivan and Joe Evans to bring the final score to 4-1.

Highlights of the match:

Has to be the performance of the two central midfield players Matt Custance and Jack Sullivan whose performances influenced the match and were the driving force behind all Square Rangers’s good work. Ryan’s penalty save deserves a mention too as it came at a crucial time in the match.
