Square Rangers 1 Barton Rovers 1

Saturday 21st April

With fourth playing second respectively and a lot at stake especially for Barton to keep the pressure on leaders Memorial Park A both teams produced an entertaining match that ended with a fair result, as considering what both teams had contributed, neither side deserved to come away from the game pointless.

Square Rangers shaded the first half on possession and shots on target, with the best chance falling to Matt, who saw his close range header well saved by the Barton goalkeeper. Matthew also came close when his long range effort skimmed over the crossbar. Barton however carried a threat when attacking and it was a clear indication of how well the Rangers defence were playing that at half-time the score was 0-0.

The second half saw Square Rangers continue their earlier good work with the midfield quartet of Joe, Jack, Matthew and Tom very influential in the pattern of play. The good work was finally rewarded when midway through the half Matt latched on to Josh’s cross to lift his shot into the top corner to make it 1-0. Barton came back very strongly and pressurised the Rangers goal forcing some drastic goal mouth scrambles that saw Nathan twice clear off his own goal line. Ryan, returning after his broken hand to line-up on pitch was doing a good job against their lively winger, whose crosses especially from corners was causing a few problems to defend against. Ten minutes from the end Barton were able to pierce the Rangers defence with some neat passing and from a wide angle their striker beat Harry with a shot into the top corner to equalise the scores at 1-1. The remainder saw both teams create half chances and Rangers courageously defended some dangerous corner kicks in the final minutes to hold out for a well deserved point.

Player of the match:

Tough tackling and a determined performance - Tom Gee.

Summary:

As a player I would say that these are the kind of matches you want to play in, competitive, keenly fought but fair. From a spectator’s view there was clearly very little between the two teams and so it was right that neither side went home disappointed.
