Penalty Competition - Square won 5-4
For this friendly match, player availability proved a problem for
Square, and the only similarity to the previous weeks starting line
up was Alex in midfield.
Other players had to adjust to positional changes, to cover for
the missing players.
Chris Jones started on pitch, instead of playing in goal, and paired
up with Jonny to provide the defensive roles, Joe switched to left
midfield to give him a chance to utilise his creative skills.
The entertaining game was end to end play, keeping all the players
in action, as both teams pushed for the first goal.
Square were fortunate to take the lead from an own goal, which then
settled them into the game and Joel struck from outside the area
to pick up their 2nd.
The second half continued to be an open game, and some individual
skill from Alex in the goal area allowed him to beat several players,
and score the 3rd for Square.
City never gave up hope, and with a long range effort in the muddy
conditions that found its way past the Square keeper, they pulled
a goal back. This gave the incentive to keep the pressure on Square,
and before long City grabbed a 2nd goal. With all to play for in
the final period, the situation made for some great football, and
some great experience for all players on both sides.
A penalty competition followed the game, with each side using 7
players.
After 6 penalties each, it was 3-3, and the City keeper had made
some great saves, and then scored the 7th, to give a 4-3 lead.
Keeper Chris Jones stepped up for the final Square penalty, which
he fired into the roof of the net to level at 4-4, and forced the
start of the sudden death stage.
Scoring proved difficult second time around, until Joel scored the
4th penalty, to seal the 5-4 win for Square.
