Cornerstone 1 Square FC
2
21st April 2007
With 2nd place on the league secure, Square could afford to take
this game in their stride, as they returned to league action after
a month long layoff.
Square started strongly, hitting the post and cross bar within the
first 5 minutes. However, having survived the initial pressure,
Cornerstone started to produce some confident football of their
own. and Square struggled to contain their long throws and goal
kicks, made more effective on the smaller pitch.
Square also lacked the cutting edge to make efforts on goal count
in the first half, and missed chances meant dropping back to defending
their goal again.
Cornerstone broke the deadlock when a clearance fell to their striker,
who took the clear chance on goal to give a half time lead.
After the interval, Square returned refreshed with confidence, and
the balance of play started to swing in their favour, as they created
problems in the Cornerstone half.
The scores were levelled when an Alex Marvin free-kick looped towards
the goal, where Tom Foster provided the flick to ensure the ball
crossed the line.
More breaks from defence, started by James, to Chris Matthews and
Alex, kept the ball in the Cornerstone half, and some hard work
by Tom Firth and Tom Foster meant scoring chances were being created.
A draw looked a fair result for the game, until Tom Foster’s
driven corner was flicked in by James, as he pushed up from defence,
allowing Square to take all the points on the day.
Jonny’s continual efforts in defence made the difference,
as Cornerstone were still causing problems in attack, and Chris
Jones in goal had to deal with the high balls that were being delivered
by Cornerstone.
