Barton Rovers A 1 Square
Rangers 3
Saturday 1st March 2008
This thoroughly deserved
victory not only lifted Square Rangers above Barton Rovers A in
the league but has also moved them into second spot in the division
which is the club’s highest position in the league.
A very strong wind was again an obvious factor to consider and with
the wind against them in the first half Square Rangers produced
an excellent 35 minutes of football. The boys looked sharper and
more focussed than the home side and took the lead quite early in
the game after Jake set up a great chance for Johnny to slide the
ball past the on-rushing keeper. Barton did come back quite strongly
for the remainder of the half but never really tested Jamie apart
from a couple of corners and a free-kick which he both dealt with
comfortably. Consolidation was the key for the rest of the half
with the back four Louis, Nathan, Josh and Ashley giving nothing
away to the Barton Rovers attackers, leaving Rangers very happy
with a 0-1 lead against the wind going into the break.
The second half playing with the wind behind them saw Rangers go
on to execute a quite superb 35 minutes of football. Playing as
a lone striker, Johnny Clarke has adapted well to the system and
his movement and hold-up play created the openings in the home side’s
back four for the runners from midfield to exploit. William playing
the anchor role in midfield gave both Jack and Spencer full licence
to get forward at every opportunity and both thrived on the space
they were given and with support from Faheem and Jake on the flanks
Rangers were able to add two further goals, one scored by Spencer,
the other Jack to give Rangers a 0-3 lead. Rangers kept up the momentum
through to the end, however just on the final whistle Barton grabbed
a consolation goal to give the final score 1-3 to Rangers.
Summary:
The manner of victory
was impressive to say the least as clearly before the game the boys
appeared up for it, and carried this out to produce a fine performance
full of belief, determination and team spirit. The execution of
tactics, together with solid defending and attacking play with explosive
pace meant for a very good day out for the boys.
