Watling Youth 0 Square Rangers 6

Saturday 1st December 2007

Square Rangers produced a fine performance scoring five first half goals and adding one further in the second half to take a six goal lead going into next week’s home second leg.

Two fortuitous hand balls by Watling inside their own penalty area allowed cool-headed Johnny Clarke to convert two almost identical penalty kicks, and he completed a quite outstanding first half performance by adding two further goals in the first half. Joe Evans looked very lively too and his pace helped set up a number of chances as Square Rangers gave the Watling defence a quite torrid time. Spencer, Jack, Faheem and Jake were each looking to get forward at every opportunity and a well-timed strike by Jack added to the score sheet mid way through the half. At the back Stewart, Will, Nathan and Josh all contributed well to restrict the home side to just a few attempts on goal which were very well dealt with by Ryan.

The second half saw a better response by the home side and certainly in the midfield area the game looked more even, however Rangers did create a number of chances that were denied by the heroics of the Watling goalkeeper. Rangers showed some excellent pass and move football that did open up the Watling defence on a number of occasions where Faheem and Joe were both unlucky not to get on the score sheet with good efforts on goal. It was another great strike from Jack that brought the only goal of the second half and although Watling showed plenty of spirit they were never able to get beyond the Square back four of Will, Louis, Ashley and well marshalled by Josh, to exert any kind of pressure on the Rangers goal for the remainder of the match.

Summary:

After a bright start the momentum was clearly with Square Rangers and for the rest of the match they did a good professional job in maintaining a decent lead and keeping a clean sheet.

Man of the match:
