Square Rangers 4 Luton Leagrave 1

Saturday 10th November

Square Rangers maintained their unbeaten run stretching now to four games thanks to a storming second half performance against a spirited Luton Leagrave team.

The conditions again proved influential as a strong wind blowing from right to left definitely hindered the team playing against the wind and Square Rangers found that to be at their cost in the first half. With the wind at their backs the visitors always looked the sharper of the two teams and Rangers had their work cut out to defend against the tricky movement of the Leagrave’s attacks. Square Rangers lacked the usual fluency in their play especially in the attacking third of the pitch, where changes were forced after falling a goal behind towards the end of the first half. However Rangers came very close to grabbing an equaliser right at the end of the half when Tom’s effort struck the crossbar from close range.

A chance to regroup at half-time saw Joe switch to an attacking role, Spencer wide right and Seth in a central midfield role. The second half saw Square Rangers use the strong wind at their backs to their advantage and enjoy some excellent pass and move football. They quickly equalised and then go ahead thanks to two free-kicks, the first was rammed in from close range by Jack and then a long range strike by Will beat the keeper to give him his first Rangers goal. The remaining twenty minutes saw Rangers play neat, intelligent football that saw them running with the ball into space, and getting their passing game going. Jack, Spencer, Nathan and Seth all enjoyed clever runs deep into the opposition’s half, and clearly our lack of fluency in the first half had been rectified. Joe Evans capped an impressive second half performance as an emergency striker by adding two further goals, and although the visitors threatened to close the deficit near the end the Rangers defence held firm to complete another good defensive performance as a unit.

Summary:

Great to see a huge turn around in the second half with Rangers getting the ball down and passing and this opened up the visitors’ defence and created good goal scoring opportunities. The fitness of the team was impressive as the first half facing the wind proved to be tough, yet the boys still had plenty energy left to come from behind and go on to win thanks to an inspired second half performance.
