Square Rangers 2 Luton Leagrave 1

Saturday 12th April 2008

South Beds Saturday League U13 Cup semi final

Square Rangers booked another Cup final place thanks to this impressive win over a spirited Luton Leagrave.

It was the usual frantic opening 15 minutes which was probably expected from a semi final, however as soon as Square Rangers were able to settle into the game their controlled football began to cause the opposition problems. The passing from midfield was able to force openings in the heart of the Leagrave defence to which Johnny and Joe both were met with good goal scoring opportunities. Midway through the half their good work was rewarded with two quick goals, Spencer took advantage of some indecision at the heart of the opposition’s defence following a well taken free-kick to slide the ball past the keeper. Then Faheem found himself in the ideal position to score his first goal for Square Rangers as he followed through a rebound from Johnny’s low effort to give Rangers a 2-0 lead. Luton Leagrave threatened on the break but their speedy dangerous striker was well marshalled by Josh as Rangers happily took their 2-0 lead going into the break.

The second half saw Luton Leagrave desperate to get back into the game while looking threatening on the break. Square Rangers offered the more controlled football, playing some good passes around midfield which brought about a good number of half chances throughout the half. We defended well to restrict our visitors’ very little joy in front of goal, except for the final minute where we conceded a penalty through a handball. Jamie was given little chance with the spot kick but it was too late in the game for any further serious action as Square Rangers booked a double Cup final date with Barton Rovers A in the next two weeks.

Player of the Match:

Busy, and displayed great vision of passing throughout the game - Spencer Park

Summary:

Pleasing to see the boys passing the ball about as well as doing the grafting of winning tackles and fighting for possession. It was our passing which hurt the opposition during that crucial part of the first half when we scored our two goals. It was great to see two firsts; - Faheem’s first goal and towards the end of the game Peter’s first appearance since breaking his leg.
