Barton Rovers B 0 Square Rangers 7
Tuesday 15th April
South Beds Saturday League
U13
Square Rangers are the new League Champions 2007/2008. They have
held their form and their nerve superbly well since their last league
defeat way back on 29th September to go ten games undefeated - winning
nine and drawing one. This fantastic run has seen them slowly climb
the table from bottom in October to fourth at Christmas, to top
by April!
The boys knew before kick-off in this midweek evening match that
a win would ensure that they would win the league and so the big
question would be, how would they react to the pressure?
It became clear pretty early into the game that Barton Rovers B
were going to make us work hard for the win the boys desperately
needed and the first fifteen minutes looked pretty even. Gradually
however Square Rangers began to impose themselves on the game and
exert some good pressure in the Barton half of the field. Midway
through the half Jack, who has a knack of scoring important goals,
latched onto a loose ball inside the area to give Rangers that crucial
opening goal. The second quickly followed with Josh opening his
account by steering a fine header into the back of the net from
a corner. Although Square Rangers threatened to extend their lead
some good defending by the home team kept the score to 0-2 going
into the break.
The boys were keen to get out for the second half where they dominated
the 35 minutes producing quality football from all areas. Our defensive
performance was excellent, allowing our midfield to really push
on and pressurise the home team’s back four. Spencer made
it 0-3 just before Peter came on allowing us to switch to 4-4-2.
His pace saw him get ahead of the back four on a number of occasions
as the home side tired and thus helped himself to a hat-trick inside
the final twenty minutes. Johnny rounded off a superb night for
the team with a well-taken lob over the goalkeeper to round off
a comprehensive 0-7 victory along with the league title.
Player of the match:
Every player did their
job extremely well, and the whole team looked solid, committed and
well-balanced. It was a great team effort.
Summary:
The team was fantastic
and to win the league after this performance was very special. The
timing of Peter’s return could not have been better as it
was great to see him involved and scoring his first Square Rangers
hat-trick (almost script written!) Square Rangers’ success
is very much down to the squad of players who each have played their
part, so well done.
