Square Rangers 2 Luton on Track 3

Saturday 26th January

South Beds Saturday Knockout Cup quarter final

After a break of six weeks Square Rangers finally got back to playing football and judging by this performance the long lay-off has not done them any harm at all.

The match was played out in typical Cup-tie fashion, full of passion, commitment and intensity. In fact a little overcharged at times as Square Rangers’ players found to their cost, falling victim to a few seriously over- the- top challenges, one of which saw the visitors’ keeper given a straight red for bringing down Johnny Clarke free on goal.
The score fluctuated with Rangers going 1-0 up through Johnny, then conceding a soft goal, only to restore the lead early in the second half with another goal from Johnny. At 2-1 Rangers created some great chances in front of goal to kill off the game, unfortunately their efforts were met by the heroics of the visitors’ stand-in keeper. Square Rangers also had to field stand-in keepers with both William and Stewart volunteering to a half each before the game. Perhaps the inexperience of the keepers helped Luton on Track to convert the few chances that they created as they pulled back a one goal deficit to lead 3-2. A spirited finale by Rangers saw them pile on attack after attack but credit to the visitors’ defensive display for they held out to leave Rangers feeling that it just wasn’t going to be our day!

Summary:
Great to see the boys back playing and giving such an excellent performance after missing so much football. If we can maintain this standard I’m confident that we can sustain a mounted challenge in the league hopefully starting with Barton Rovers A next week.

Players of the match:
Two towering performances - A superb defensive display against a quick and talented striker, and looked dangerous when pushed into midfield- Josh Skelcey. A real leader’s performance in central midfield, supported attack and defence extremely well throughout the match - Jack Sullivan
