Stand in City Manager,
Kim Hobbs, will have been pleased with the doggedness of his young
team in defending so well for much of the first half. The best chance
for Square fell to Alex, but the impressive City keeper threw himself
to block the shot, and held on to the powerful volley.
City then had their best chance of the game, one on one with the
keeper, which was scrambled away by Ben’s determined efforts
in goal.
It was from a free-kick that Square took the lead, with Alex whipping
over the ball which found its way through the packed goal area,
possibly picking up the faintest of glances to beat the stranded
keeper.
A minute before the interval Matt was put through to score the team’s
second to give a comfortable half time lead.
Square patiently maintained pressure on City through the second
half, and Alex’s contribution to the game continued, and he
was rewarded with his second goal to extend the lead. Chris Matthews
was also working well and skilfully created space to run the ball
at the defence, which allowed him to extend the lead further.
Some impressive play was on display for Square, with overlapping
runs from Chris Jones which created chances for him in front of
goal, and Tom’s first time touches creating chances for Freddie
and Matt. Harry’s superb reflex save in goal ensured the clean
sheet, and on his debut, Afsar looked very confident as he dealt
with City’s skilful strikers.
Man of the Match:
