Square FC 1 St. Mary's

St Marys, as last seasons
games proved, were tough opposition, and in the first meeting of
the two sides this season, Square found this game would need a huge
effort if they were to make their mark.
Square had the majority of possession through out the game, with
time and space in midfield, but strong, tactical defending by St
Marys gave few clear scoring opportunities.
In their urgency to break the deadlock, Square pushed onto the defenders,
but found little room to play creative football, and the best chances
fell to Alex with long range shots, one of which hit the post.
As frustration crept in to their game, possession was wasted by
Square, and St Marys made the most of their opportunities by breaking
into the Square half. The speed of the breaks meant the Square defence
had to battle to contain the 2 forward players. Eventually St Marys
created a scoring chance, and took the lead in the first half.
The second half saw St Marys defending strongly again, and there
was no obvious way through. When another break away goal raised
their confidence, Square lost shape and organisation.
Tom Firth battled away in the goal area, and his well taken touch
from a neat pass pulled Square back into the game, and had their
confidence restored. The final minutes saw Square bombard the goal
area, and had a run of corners, as St Marys clung on to their lead.
