Square FC 2 Hightown
1
Saturday 8th December
2007
This was an amazing match
that rose above the appalling weather conditions that arrived in
time for kick off, as the rain and wind battered the players.
A below par Hightown suffered their first League loss of the season
against an inspired Square team performance.
(Hightown’s last league defeat was in October 2005).
Early on, Matt outpaced the Hightown defence to a through ball and
touched it past the keeper, to take the lead for Square.
The visitors struggled for rhythm and fluency, as the home side
hunted the ball down, and looked more threatening.
Square should have extended their lead many times, as they created
promising openings, but lacked the clinical finish, as chances went
begging.
Hightown were always in with a chance, with only a 1 goal lead to
chase, and within minutes of the break, a high ball was misjudged
by the Square defence, and this allowed Hightown to net an equaliser.
Chris Matthews was clean through twice in the game, but the final
touch went agonisingly wide of the post.
As the game moved into its final stages, the competitiveness increased
and an innocuous challenge resulted a in free kick for Square, but
also yellow cards were awarded to both Alex and the Hightown player.
Ben stepped up from defence to take the kick, and delivered an accurate
ball into the goal area, which found the net, and this added to
the strong sense of purpose Square were showing.
This was a rewarding result for the tremendous team effort Square
produced on the day, but now the challenge is to maintain this level
of performance for the rest of the season.
Man of the Match:
Chris Matthews, for superb
commitment throughout the game, creating chances for himself and
others, and his tactical movement into defence as the game drew
to its closing stages.
