The Magnificent
Six, eventually Seven
Square found themselves having to raise their game for this re-arranged
fixture, as they started the game with only 6 players. All of these
six starters produced an immense performance, and deserve recognition
for their efforts in this match – Harry, Chris Jones, Chris
Matthews, Ben, Matt, and Tom.
It was hardly one-way traffic against a battling Cornerstone, who
could have taken the lead, and there was little to choose between
the sides in a close first half, with Cornerstone's work rate ensuring
they more than held their own against the Dunstable side.
Chris Matthews, and Ben both tormented the Cornerstone defence and
were the creators of the visitors' best early chances. Matt eventually
settled Squares' nerves when he clipped the ball into the net from
close range.
However, Cornerstone replied almost instantly, managing to find
the target from close range due to a defensive mix up, to level
the score for the first half.
It could have been a similar story in the second half, but with
the arrival of Alex bringing the Square team up to full strength,
they seemed to find the cutting edge.
The visitors were now rampant and Alex put them back in the lead
after skipping round their defence and driving home. Tom then added
to the score with a simple finish after getting on the end of a
cross in a packed goal mouth.
There was still time for Matt to give the score line a rather harsh
look, and to pick up his second goal in the final minutes, instantly
controlling Ben’s long goal kick, and with his second touch
put the game out of Cornerstone’s reach.
The victory was a thoroughly deserved one for the Square side who
produced an awesome team display working for each other throughout
the game.
Man of the Match:
Was awarded to both Chris
Matthews and Matt Custance, who both led by example throughout.
