This was Square’s
opportunity to continue their excellent performance from the previous
week’s game against Hightown.
Square did start the game energetically moving the ball across the
pitch to pressurise the MBC defence.
However, MBC were match to the challenge, and broke down the attacks,
while the MBC keeper was in superb form, dealing with shots and
crosses comfortably.
Some loose possession in the centre of the field provided MBC with
chances to strike back, and Chris Jones and Josh in defence had
to keep their concentration to prevent clear chances on goal.
It took 15 minutes of end to end play before Square opened the scoring.
Alex fired a shot on goal, which was covered by the MBC keeper,
but a cruel deflection off a defender put the ball in the net.
This was shortly followed by another goal, as Alex ran the length
of the pitch with the ball to neatly slot home his 2nd.
The confidence in the 2nd half for Square caught MBC unawares, as
straight from the kick off Matt Custance was allowed to run at goal,
and tucked the ball into the net.
Chris Matthews also caused problems as he ran at the defenders,
and was rewarded with an excellent driven goal.
Further pressure was applied by Square, but Ben struggled to hit
the target, while Tom and Freddie had their efforts saved by the
keeper, however Josh completed the scoring for Square.
To the credit of MBC, they never dropped their commitment, and were
rewarded with a last minute goal, as they caught defence and keeper
out of position.
